High Side Gondola Number 1268

General Information

This gondola is in better than average shape. Outside the car is fairly normal. There are some unusual aspects on the inside of the car, however. First the bottom corner plates on the "B" end are doubled, and the grain boards are rectangular instead of beveled. There are also rectangular grain boards at the ends of the car. I believe these grain boards were installed to prevent bulk cargo such as coal or limestone from working its way down between the built up floor and the car sides. Box cars have similar boards and that's where the name comes from. The lack of unused drill holes in the side sills and the bottom side boards indicate that these parts were probably installed new when the car was rebuilt.
