High Side Gondola Number 1331
General Information
I'm not one hundred percent sure this car should be included in this group. The car is marked on the under side with the number 1331. However, there are no signs of the original center stakes on any of the side boards or on the side sills. The D&RGW occasionally changed car numbers, and it is possible that this car was not originally in the nine stake fleet.
No matter what the car's real number might be, it is pretty typical of the high side gondola fleet. The only aspect that is unusual about the car is the one inch shim between the top and the second side board on both sides. Several existing high sides have these thin shim boards inserted in the sides, apparently to bring the overall height up to 50 inches. This car also has a mixture of beveled and rectangular side grain boards and a 6 x 9 inch metal plate inside of the left wall behind the first stake on the "A" end. This board is actually two pieces, and this is where the splice is. The inside corner plates sport a variety of configurations (see the car end diagrams.)
