6300 Series Flatcar

After the drawings were developed, several people built models using the drawings, both to "proof" them and because we wanted a model of these cars. All three of the cars here were built in On3.

A word of advice: use stock car bolsters and striker plates for your model. The rest of the hardware is stock D&RGW parts with the exception of the queen posts. There are no correctly sized posts in O-scale, so you will just have to go with whatever is closest. The other scales probably have the same problem. Use the rail clamp castings that are intended for the idler flats. For the larger clamps, at the needle beams, combine two of the idler flat clamps together. The square truss rod washers and their bolts can be made from sheet styrene. I'm not sure of the exact lettering for the car. The larger text is easy and the dimensional text is: length = 40' width = 8' 2" capacity is 50000. What some of the smaller stuff says, I don't know. Follow general Rio Grande practice, and study the photos in the photo section

The top three pictures are of two cars built by Hugh Blaney, and the bottom three are of the car I built. Hugh numbered his cars 6302 and 6314 (without the added brackets), and I numbered mine 6308. After it was finished I saw some Al Chione slides, from the late fifties, of a 6300 series car in Durango. I was amazed to discover that the car was the 6308. Small world.

All three cars were built from wood with plastic hardware. I used the long reefer truck that usually goes under the short reefer (not correct) and Hugh combined a regular D&RGW freight truck with a Precision Scale C&S tender truck to get a truck that looks very good but sets a little high. Hugh weathered his cars using acrylic washes while I used Weatherall. Using acrylic washes allowed Hugh to paint some brass bar stock to match his wood. He was able to glue these to the bottom of the cars for added weight. The only additional weight in my car comes from the Precision Scale wheel sets. All three cars seem to track just fine however, despite the difference in weight. Hugh used San Juan idler flat rail clamps while I scratch built mine. From our experience it takes about two weeks to build one of these cars.
