An Update on #30/74
Jason Midyette
C&N Locomotive #30: The Boulder County Railway Historical Society has applied for a Grant from the State Historical Fund to repair locomotive #30's front tender truck. The trucks wooden bolsters are nearly rotted through, placing the truck in danger of collapsing. The expected cost for the repairs is $4,000.00. The BCRHS will be notified in May as to the status of the application. A mechanical evaluation of locomotive #30 is scheduled for July of this year. The evaluation will be performed by Scott Lindsay of Steam Operations Corporation and will be used to plan the locomotive's restoration.
D&RGW Coach #280: Work on the coach is progressing on schedule. Uhrich locomotive works recently completed the process of making new window sashes and is almost done replacing the posts and belt rails in the North wall of the coach. The posts provide the structural support for the side walls, and nearly all of them were rotten where they were notched for the window sills. Uhrich has decided to patch the side sills instead of replace them entirely as the only bad portions were a few feet at each end. The west truck has been entirely rebuilt and is ready to place under the coach. The lamp that came with #280 to Boulder in 1952 has been loaned to Uhrich so that it may be used as a pattern to make new lamps, as all three of the lamps are missing from the coach. The original lamp has been stored for many years at the Colorado Railroad Museum and actually came from another D&RGW coach. The railroad removed the lamp from another car and sent it to Boulder with #280, at the request of Dr. Schooland. At the time, one of the lamps was missing from #280 and Dr. Schooland wanted it to be complete.
D&RGW Caboose #04990: The BCRHS hosted a work day on #04990 on March 4th. Volunteers were able to scrape the loose paint from the caboose and apply one coat of paint. This is the start of a project to stabilize the caboose and perform minor repairs. Plans include painting and lettering the caboose as well as replacing the platform decking and other minor repairs. Future workdays are scheduled for every other Saturday, however the weather has not exactly been cooperating. Diamond Vogel Paints of Boulder has donated the paint for the caboose and McGuckin Hardware has provided brushes, rollers and other tools. The one surviving platform step from #04990 has been taken to Uhrich Locomotive Works will it will be used as a pattern to make three new steps. A possible trade with the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is being discussed. The Friends are restoring D&RGW short caboose #0579 and are in need of parts such as end railings and caboose #04990 is in need of a brake system. As the City has end railings and other parts from RGS caboose #0401 that are not needed for #04990 and the Friends have a brake system from a D&RGW boxcar that they do not need, it is hoped a trade can be worked out. A Boulder resident has donated an Estate model 140 caboose stove to the BCRHS. This stove is a very typical turn of the century caboose stove and will be appropriate for use in caboose #04990. The stove is essentially complete, but in need of minor repairs and rust removal.
