The information for this section comes from an accounting ledger maintained by the D & RGW. It lists, for the most part, all of the events in each car's life that involved money. Starting in 1919 it details all major work, including the high side rebuild done to each car and then lists the disposition of the car. There are discrepancies in the ledger however, such as published photos dated after the car was supposed to be retired. Apparently the accuracy of this ledger was not vital, as there are several entries that show cars being retired simply to balance with the equipment register. When conflicts arises, all I can say is, this is how the ledger reads.
Some trends become apparent when studying the ledger. First, all of the cars that retained their wooden draft gear were done at the beginning of the rebuild. Second, most of the cars still showing when the ledger was closed in November 1970 still exist.
The ledger shows 454 cars in 1919 and 451 cars when the rebuild started in 1925. It slowly dwindles to just 87 cars in 1970 and then to just 4 when the cover page closes in 1981. The list shows 7 cars receiving Barber roller side bearings in 1924, 46 cars being rebuilt without economy draft gear in the first half of 1925, 94 cars getting the full rebuild in the first half of 1925, and 304 cars getting the full rebuild in the second half of 1925. The next major expenditure was in February 1930 when 5 cars got replacement draft gears and bolsters. The last expenditure was in 1938, when 22 cars got economy draft gear.
